Another Star Is In The Heavens...Ellie Greenwich has died today

The world is a sadder place. Not just because another page has been turned nor because another chapter in the "Great American Songbook" has closed, but because she mearly no longer belongs to this world. It was announced today. At 3:25 PM ET at the age of 68, Ellie Greenwich died of a heart attack at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital, where she had been admitted a few days ago for treatment of pneumonia, according to her niece, Jessica Weiner.

She was probably one of the most successful songwriters ever and one-of-the-best-of-the-best. She wasn't caught up with writing partners. She could spin gold with all of her writing partners: Jeff Barry, Phil Spector, Tony Powers, George "Shadow" Morton, Nona Hendryx, Mike Rashkow, Jeff Kent, or Ellen Foley. She breathed new life into the Tin-Pan Alley school-of-songwriting (something we call the Brill Building). Ellie (the aformentioned Jeff Barry, Phil Spector, and Tony Powers) along with Burt Bacharach/Hal David, Gene Pitney, Gerry Goffin/Carole King, Jerry Leiber/Mike Stoller, Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil, Doc Pomus/Mort Shuman, and Neil Sedaka/Howard Greenfield changed Pop music in those late Rock 'n' Roll years between 1959-64 (or the first wave of Rock 'n' Roll's death from the tragedies of Buddy Holly/Richie Valens/Little Richards/Jerry Lee Lewis/Elvis, and the start of Beatlemania). Late Brill writers: Tommy Boyce/Bobby Hart, Neil Diamond (Ellie's discovery), and Andy Kim and Brill-influenced writers: Jackie DeShannon, Nickolas Ashford/Valerie Simpson/Joshie Armstead, and Laura Nyro chaged Pop music in terrific but utterly different ways: they were continuing in a tradition rather than shaping a sound.

It is difficult to measure the influence of an artist like Ellie Greenwich. It is a victory that people (and not just grown folk) play her songs today; the fact that children still know, even today, the opening beat of "Be My Baby" is remarkable; Darlene Love making us swoon and cry from the beauty, purity, joy, and sadness of her definitive recordings these Spector/Greenwich/Barry tunes especially her's and their MASTERPIECE "Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)" is a testiment to the power of truth and emotional resonance (which is why artists still want to record these songs, even if they do lack the emotional depth of a Ronnie Spector or a Tina Turner); Amy Winehouse wrote her album 'Back to Black' based on the Wall-Of-Sound that was co-written by Miss Greenwich. All of these are signifiers that Ellie Greenwich is going no where eventhough the musically sacred vessel through which these miraculous perfections were crafted is gone. These songs were youthful, short, simple, and emotionally complex (they were about as Rock 'n' Roll as you can get (proto-counter culture): good girls in love with bad boys, teenage anthems of carnage, murder ballads, let's hurry up and get married so we can have sex, unrequieted love, falling in love with the wrong people, anti-authoritarian, angsty, yearning, the terror of being alone at 18, leaving home out of spite, the person political, leaving home on principle, and full of aching desire). These are songs that are about the everything...the whole world, and yet they are about nothing.

While, Ellie Greenwich showed she was still awesome well into the 1980s embracing her past and building a new future: creating on of the first jukebox musicals and the story of her life, Leader Of The Pack, which earned her Tony and Grammy Award nominations and writing songs with/for three of Nona Hendryx's albums (Nona, Art Of Defense, and The Heat) as well as singing background vocals/writing for Cyndi Lauper; it is safe to say that she will probably not be remembered for singing with the Raindrops nor her two albums: Composes, Produces and Sings [UA, 1968] and Let It Be Written, Let It Be Sung... [Verve, 1973], her singles or demos, but don't fool yourself these are treasures (from the height of Pop sophistication), and they prove that girlfriend can really sing. There is a certain depth that she offers with the readings of her songs, rather, an insight that only their creater can offer. While, most people perfer the "original" versions or covers of Miss Ellie's songs (and they are terrific premire hit readings of her material by The Ronettes, Darlene Love, The Beach Boys, Ike & Tina Turner, The Crystals, and Leslie Gore) these are satisfying albums--personal statements and scrapbooks from argueably the finest era in American Pop music (she never seemed concerned with finding solo stardom nor navagating this type-of-career that appealed to Carole King & Laura Nyro).

Ellie Greenwich remained formost a songwriter, but she also stands among the first women to run a record label (Red Bird/Blue Cat) and produce (singles for The Shirelles, The Jelly Beans, Dusty Springfield, The Dixie Cups, The Raindrops, Connie Francis, The Shangri-Las as well as all the early Neil Diamond singles). The shortlist of really business minded women involved in the creative process more than singing or writing (even writing wasn't much more open to women; women weren't really taken seriously) along with Ellie Greenwich were Sylvia Robinson, Florence Greenberg, and Dusty Springfield (who "unofficially" produced her sixties records with John Franz for Philips). But writing pop songs was a "acceptable" place for women to start gaining more creative freedom in the music industry, and they flurish the women did. Women offered a unique perspect to the songs they wrote--"the woman's viewpoint"--dishing up heartbreak, affirmations, self-control, power-over-her-own-destiny, and joyious love; the women who wrote these songs lived these lives, had friends who walked these shoes, or heard their mama's tell them the tales.

If you want a real education (not the stuff they teach in school, although, that is important too, I guess), go learn something about one of the ABSOLUTE best songwriters, EVAH!! She wrote some of your favorite songs, possibly all of them, truly one of the geniuses of music.

AHHHHHHHH!! I can't believe that my girl Freda is coming back to NYC. I was so angry at my self for missing her last February. But this is Jesus helping to make my dreams come true, and quickly my anger turns to tears-of-joy, and Michael wept. Hot-on-the-heels of the re-issue of her second album How Do You Say That I Don't Love You Anymore Freda is gonna be at Iridium in NYC for two shows a night from Thursday until Sunday of this week. She will be performing her critically acclaim one woman show. But Freda #1 Philly fan (#1 because ain't nobody who plays more Freda consistantly on the radio than me, not to toot my own horn, but you know...) will be hoping that she will also pull out a few Invictus/ABC/Capitol gems. Get your tickets and familiarize yourself with Miss Payne, and to any of you out there who write her off a novelty one-hit-wonder pop/soul singer, boy, do you have a lot to learn; Freda can sing anything starting singing jazz, broadway, pop, soul, protest songs, disco, and back to jazz. But her phrasing is jazz; she does jazz vocal runs, and she is a jazz styled singer.

The world mourns the big pop star, the self-styled & self-professed "King of Pop", but this is not the Michael Jackson for whom I weep. I weep for the child-genius. The embryonic elder-statesman soul man who channeled David Ruffin & James Brown. The one who doesn't ask for your respect but demanded it, amazingly he always stayed black, sounded black, and crossed over in a huge way to a white audience (who amazingly were clued into real-blackness for a brief moment in the early-seventies before radio in the '70s fragmented and segregated itself into severe and rigid micro-genres and re-ghettoized/self-segregated for enumerable demographics). He was pop without being white; accepted on his own terms (with the help of a lot of very smart people: Gladys Knight, Bobby Taylor, Suzanne dePasse, Berry Gordy, Shelley Berger, Suzee Ikeda, Diana Ross, Freddie Perren, Deke Richards, Alponzo Mizell, Hal David, and Willie Hutch to specifically name a few). Can you imagine? The one who mounted not just one career but succeed in two careers: one group and one solo. The boy who innately knew more about pain, love, heartbreak, passion, ecstasy, and loss than most adults. All this and two dozen hits before his voice changed. AMAZING.

Yet it is remarkable that people forget about his early solo years. Sure they know a few Jackson 5 hits unless they lived for the boys, and everyone knows every monster track by 1979 on..., but a lot of people don't even know "Ben". Well it is time to re-discover his early solo albums. Hip-O Select was right on time to school all the kitty babies on M.J. for this years soul summer school, and M.F.G.F. can help with lessons. To tell you the truth I wasn't gonna do it. I was gonna resist, but now I want it more than ever. I broke down and just pre-ordered Hello World: The Motown Solo Collection tonight. You should buy it, too. Only 7000 copies so order it before it arrives on July 10th.

The scandal with slip away. It doesn't matter when the work is this good. It is difficult to grow-up in the public eye; since, your daddy put you on stage at age 5. Being a Jackson made him tough, but it was also difficult to be a Jackson. I think he just gave up. It was too hard. He was too tired. He was used and abused by many men. He was too weak to go on... From the early reports we are lead to believe that Michael Jackson died today at age 50 from cardiac arrest because he was strenuously preparing for his first world tour in 12 years. Fears about his health had been stirring for months. Ultimately I neither see Michael Jackson as a tragic figure, sure he was complex, flawed, and led an extraordinary life, nor do I believe he failed on delivering after his early promise. His career seems just right. A few more terrific records would have been nice. He is gonna be in my thoughts for awhile as are the rest of the Jackson dynasty, so I am gonna be listening to Michael Jackson from the beginning, the Michael Jackson who started it all.

For a singer who always thrilled, she was quietly the best. She just sang her own way, and her star rose quite often hit-less, but the lack of hits had little effect on her career. She is one of the best examples of forging a career with the help of true believers, real music lovers, and fans. It is these folk who allowed her to give to them by letting her do her own thing. I don't play the music of Koko Taylor often enough, but oh, the treasures. She simply was one of the best blues singers, sometimes even bordering on soul. She did not just interpret the Great Blues Catalog; she also owned new material tailored to her. She was one of the pioneers in the second generation of electric blues, and one of the few women in that male dominated era, an era where being the baddest player in the combo was what made you king. She proved that the Blues, the real Blues is all about the emotion in one's voice and the stories being told, not the new variations on the same chord progression passed down from generation-to-generation, and she reminds us that the Blues genre is like one big dysfunctional, loving family. There is room for anyone with skill and anything that gives one a disctinct voice that set one apart.

Koko Taylor passed yesterday. The 80-year-old "Queen of the Blues" died following complications from her May 19th surgery to correct gastrointestinal bleeding. She has influenced three generations of Blues singers. I can't imagine only women being influenced by Koko's power and emotion. The most significant shouter to be directly influenced by Miss Taylor is Shemekia Copeland, and lets not forget she looked goooood for being almost 81 years old.

Let's keep her alive. Listen to her life's work...start with these great Chess singles. My favorite is "Fire".

Everyone agreed that Keri Hilson was really good; even the guy (who obviously came because his girlfriend NEEDED to be there last night as much as any of us) that sat next to Julie and I agreed. I enjoyed The-Dream, but it was a little weird for him to sing some of his duets without all his ladies.

Keyshia declared it from the stage that "it stops here". We are done with men that treat us bad. 2009 is the year for no more wasting time on no good men. I have too many friends who need to hear Keyshia's message, but they just don't want to listen because they have to learn it for themselves like we all do. They will get there, and just like Keyshia they say "I used to feel that way." Keyshia is such a down-home-girl; she is coolest and the nicest (just like Anita Baker & Miss Patti) shared her spotlight with her background singers and Amina Harris. Keyshia sounded SOOOOO good. People need to see R&B/Urban/Soul singers live more often because these artists can really sing (unlike a lot of pop singers who are all studio tricks), but we forget this because we are so used to listening to the albums the live experience sometimes is secondary for people. Being in NYC it is great for all the surprise guests. You will never guess who appeared on stage. Nas. Then Keyshia started singing "Trust", and I hoped (like with all her duets for her singing partners to appear, but she couldn't have everyone), and it started out like her duets when her partners weren't available, but then we heard a voice that was not Keyshia, and this beautiful woman steps out from the shadows, and it is Monica. Julie didn't even realize. I went crazy along with about 5600 other fans. We screamed the words. We danced to every groove, and even cried a little because we love KC but also for ourselves. Her songs compliment our lives so beautifully. Keyshia's music speaks about the love moments of my life; she knows what I am going through, and I am feeling the way she feels everytime her newest album is released.

I don't think that the boyfriends, husbands, fathers, sons, and brothers dislike the records Keyshia, The-Dream, Keri, and Bobby, but I just don't think a lot of them really know the records, so they have trouble really getting into them, and they don't connect with the idea of being mistreated by a man or finding your voice and female/self-empowerment.

Go see Keyshia Cole, The-Dream, Keri Hilson, and Bobby Valentino at NJPAC on June 2nd. Who knows I might be able to scrap together enough money for a second dose of the hottest tour of 2009.

...so I went to work on the Al Jarnow film project, and....I met Renaldo Domino along the way.

I just arrived home from an amazing week-end with some of the guys with Numero Group. You can read about my experience on the Numero Blog here about my experience's at Al Jarnow's house (subject of new book/DVD project) up to where we were going to the Renaldo Domino show at Dig Deeper. I had always been wanting to check out these Dig Deeper events, but live always seemed to get in the way. All I can think now is "What was sooooo important that I missed Tami Lynn or Eula Cooper's performance?" NOTHING! Numero saved my soul music Soul. I am back-on-track, and now remember that supporting your heros in real-life is so very important because soul music is a communal experience, and these performers really are true artists, and they still got "IT". Ben, Zac, Kyle, and Michael were filming Renaldo Domino's performance tonight (and another interview). It was just a coincidence that they were in the NYC metro area the weekend Renaldo was going to be also. For those of you who don't know Renaldo Domino is highlighted on the major 2CD/4LP retrospective of the output of Twinight/Twilight records out of Chicago. It is called Eccentric Soul: Twinight's Lunar Revenge.

The fried catfish and all the fixings (candied yams, macaroni & cheese, and cornbread) were fantastic at the Five Spot Soul Food Supper Club.

Mr. Domino was super nice and the most gracious (it was perfect; I only wish I would have been more dressed up to meet a true soul legend), and his voice is still terrific; he sounds as good today as in 1970, and he even tore it up with a cover of Curtis' "Move On Up". Somebody needs to cut an album on Renaldo, and the Divine Soul Rhythm Band might just be the perfect groove for him reignite a music career.

The world is waiting for you Renaldo. Hopefully there are enough of the faithful that the world won't fail you again. I will be here to play your records on M.F.G.F. any time, any day.

The Marvelettes' Are 'Forever'!

The Marvelettes were Motown's first out-of-the-box-hit stars, but they seemed to never be able to recapture their mega-star status after their initial blush of fame, but they held-on lasting through-out the Sixties. They were Motown's first to have a straight #1 record (and to add insult to the star-making factory the girls wrote the song all-by-themselves). They were one of Motown's most enduring and definite crowd pleasers; the maintained a sort of half-life as a mid-selling group, who crafted musical perfection for the true believers who held-on. They more than any other artist at Motown created anthems that proved the soundtrack to people's lives.

Anyone who doesn't like the Marvelettes is not cool with me. Are you kidding me? Are these people not fans of good music, I mean, are their other senses heightened? Have they ever heard "Please Mr. Postman", "Forever", "Beachwood 4-5789", "Strange I Know", "Locking Up My Heart", "I'm Too Strong To Be Strung Along", "Too Many Fish In The Sea", "My Baby Must Be A Magician", "I Need Someone", "A Need For Love", "Playboy", "Destination: Anywhere", "Someday, Someway", and "I'll Keep Holding On". These haters just straight-up have NO SOUL. The Marvelettes platters were not just fan favorites. These records were Motown miracles and top productions by top soul men and even a few musical geniuses that shockingly never seemed to get the entire support of the Motown machine in promotion. Finally for the lucky 5000 who still buy physical copies of audio artifacts will for a limited time be able to buy the first volume in a series to return to the throne these members of soul royalty with Forever: The Complete Motown Albums, Vol. 1 (3xCD/87 songs) from hip-oselect.com, and for those who don't want to own records anymore; you will be able to buy them on itunes.com.

Don't let music industry silence, current pop-taste, and contemporary pop audience disinterest fool you: these women are SUPERSTARS. The are only one of four majorly important Motown recordings stars to never be inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall Of Fame (the other three being Mary Wells, Brenda Holloway, and Junior Walker & The All-Stars, sadly, members of the RRHF wouldn't even tease about Kim Weston's possible entrance, but she would also be on the top of my list)...ugh! White People! Let's hope this will re-ignite interest in those Marvelous Marvelettes.

Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens...plus other Daptone Gospel News!

The first time I'd ever seen Naomi Shelton (then Naomi Davis) was at Sharon Jones' 50th Birthday party at Irving Plaza as part of the Daptone Supersoul Revue. I knew I was witnessing something special, something really good--a pure musical inspiration. She not only has soul, but she has the Spirit. These are beautiful records with haunting Gopsel sound. A lot of folks will say that is an old-fashioned Gospel sound (I can't help but think your parents will like this album--mine do), but I don't believe Contemporary Gospel records ever achieve what they attempt to do or the success that they deserve (they try to attract an R&B, Soul, Hip-Hop, or Urban audience, but we don't need to buy Gospel records that have The-Dream-esque productions because we can just listen to The-Dream). People who buy Contemporary Gospel records with their slick productions (not that they aren't terrific; they are great, and there is room in the world for them, but there is also room for records that have that Gospel up-right piano) are already converted they are already buying them (they just don't appeal to other audiences), but other types of Gospel productions might appeal to a non-Gospel audience (i.e. young folks and white people). It is like preaching to the choir.

I hope this brings Gospel back to its proper place in our world and our music culture. It is time for Soul to rediscover its Gospel roots. Much like R&B today has forgotten about the Blues. This is probably the MOST EXCITING record issue this year. This is the music event of 2009. Do yourself a favor and go see Naomi Shelton and the Gospel Queens whenever they come to your town. In New York we are spoiled since Naomi and the ladies are at Fat Cat every Friday. I don't care why you go, but just go see. Do it for yourself. Do it because your Soul is craving something real that has been lacking in music for too long. Do it because Naomi is a inspiration. Do it to prove me wrong. Just go and take everyone you know.

An American Tragedy: Phil Spector

I know, I know..."you do the crime you do the time". But I still love my music idols, and I feel really protective towards any that are crazy, unloved, small, or picked-on. I know he is coo-coo bananas, and the rumours about him lead the general population to believe he deserves what he got, and suggest it was a long time coming for his reckless behavior (with guns), for his cruelty and abuse of then wife, Ronnie Spector, and for the way he treated his associated artists (treating them like they were disposable and barely paying them), but like a mother hen I just hate to see my little mad-genius chickie in any pain or being told by society in a court of law that he is rotten and a murderer.

Today is a sad day in music history. The only other musical tragedy tried in the court of laws that comes to mind was when Little Willie John was convicted of manslaughter in 1966 for a fatal knifing incident following a show in Seattle. Little Willie John died nearly 41 years ago in 1968 at Washington State Prison in Walla Walla. The official cause of death was a heart attack, though some say it was pneumonia or asphyxiation, but he really died of a broken heart. He just gave up, after he lost his appeal. He was 30 years old. 30 year olds don't of heart attacks.

Phil Spector, 69, was convicted of second-degree murder, and he is soon to serve at least 18 years, according to the Los Angeles Times, a jury today has found Mr. Spector guilty of the 2003 murder of model/actress Lana Clarkson. It is painful to know that he is going to die in prison; he will be 87 when released (if he receives the minimal sentance). I just feel terrible about the tragedy. I feel terrible for Lana Clarkson, and I feel awful for Phil Spector. The conviction doesn't offer any "why" there is no reason that has come-to-light. It is a waste. A waste of two lives. The sadness of this tragic genius is that he has been deserted by the American Pop listening audience, and this severed relationship stopped him from creating his beautiful records and forced him to withdraw and retreat into himself living in a world he created for himself...inside his head removed from the outside world. I can't, but feel the only persons consoled by this verdict are the family of Miss Clarkson. Everyone has lost.

One of my first Motown HEROS leaves the spotlight after nearly 50 years. She paved thousands of miles on the soul highway that criss-crossed America. She is one of those who are made of hearty stock and has ridden out all the music industry, and she came-out-on-top a winner, a survivor. But all that doesn't matter. What matters is her music will endure, and she is beloved by soul, Motown, rock 'n' roll, and European fans alike.

And I want to thank her for all-of-us for changing, improving, and enriching our lives. Eventhough, sometimes her only reward has been for the love of the music and the admiration of the true believers. Keep the Faith.

The long awaited boxed-set of the Marvelettes complete Motown albums are soon-to-be-reissued; this year on the 50th anniversary of Motown records.

Dear Fans:

I am sorry to inform everyone, that I have decided to retire from the business in order to take full time care of my youngest son Sammy.

Also because of my retirement, there will be no "original" member of THE MARVELETTES performing nor on tour. So please be carefull when you hear or see any type of advertisement claiming that THE MARVELETTES are performing live in or near anywhere that you live.

For sometime now, I have been thinking serious about retirement. It has become that time, I am getting older and traveling is no longer
the enjoyment that it was once for me!

I hate to travel by train, and touring on a bus is just not for me any longer. You the fans, have always been great supporters of both the group's live performances as well our many hits over the past many years that the "original" group had been active.

Love comes in two directions, from your hearts to us and from our hearts to you and it has always been that way! Thank you so much, we have all gone through the good times as well the hard times in all of our lifes.

I want to thank Berry Gordy; Motown Records Corporation; all of the many fans all over the world; all of the many performers that we have graced the concert stage and had the great honor to perform along side; our many support backup musicians over the years; and a very special thank you to Billy Wolfe who since 2002 helped me to get back past recording royalities that I never knew even were out there. He worked very hard to assist us in the flight, concerning the imposters issue and making sure that you the fans were always protected from being ripped off by local appearances by these so called rip-off artists and those who managed as well kept booking them in spirit of many warnings of court action on the group's best of interests.

Billy Wolfe is a very special man, who with the talent that he has continued to protect the "original" artists that continue to perform night after night for fans such as yourselfs. He has continued to hurt both emotionally as well mentally, daue to many long hours of continued fighting against the cancer that continues to be active in this industry by those that claim to be an "original" member of this group as well many others who have had the same problems with someone claiming to have been an original member of a given group and continue to live off the fame and careers of those who long ago traveled night after night by bus across country to make concerts that you the fans have paid good money in order to relive many fond and great memories of days gone bye!

Somewhere out there, is a man they called the "smart one". Billy Wolfe if you hear of this thank you, it comes from within my heart for all the pain as well many moments of troubles that I had caused you.

You gave from your heart, you supported me when it was deeply needed, and you also were hurting when I should had been understanding and I was not!

I wish that there were more real gentlemen like you, in a business where the black artists were always ripped off by some white manager or promoter or booking agent. You showed me concern, as well alot of guts when times got really hard and rough. I am just so sorry, that I pushed you away when I should had kept you in our corner.

Delores and David Winans Sr. lead their brood in a rousing concert at the Universal Amphitheatre in 1992. He was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1999 for his solo CD “Uncensored.” Together, they were nominated for their CD “Mom & Pop Winans” in 1989.

David "Pop" Winans Sr., the Grammy-nominated patriarch of the award-winning gospel music family, died today. He was 74.

A statement from his family said he died at a Nashville hospice, where he had been since January after suffering a heart attack and stroke in October.

In 1999, Winans was nominated for a Grammy Award for his solo CD "Uncensored." He and his wife, Delores, known as Mom Winans, were nominated for their CD "Mom & Pop Winans" in 1989. She was at his bedside when he died, the statement said.

He was the father of BeBe and CeCe Winans, known for their hits "Addictive Love" and "I'll Take You There." Four other children -- Carvin, Marvin, Michael and Ronald -- performed as the Winans, recording such songs as "Ain't No Need to Worry," featuring Anita Baker.

In recent years, Mom and Pop Winans appeared regularly at Benny Hinn crusades and on the Trinity Broadcasting Network's "Praise the Lord" program.

David Winans was born April 20, 1934, in Detroit and began singing with a gospel quartet at age 18. He met Delores while both were singing in the Lemon Gospel Choir. They were married in 1953 and had 10 children. Their son Ronald died in 2005.

Winans was a preacher at a Pentecostal church in Detroit, but also worked as a car salesman, taxi driver, custodian and barber. After four of his children signed a recording contract, he was their manager for awhile. "We were oriented to gospel music, and we taught our children nothing but the ways of the Lord," Winans told the Washington Post in 1992. "I never let them go to shows or even to the theater; I never let them get involved with any other activity but church."

Memorial services are planned Tuesday and Wednesday at Perfecting Church in Detroit, where Marvin is the senior pastor.

MASTERPIECE: Keyshia Cole "You Complete Me"

The first great single of the year is Keyshia Cole's "You Complete Me". After the slight artistic slump of "Playa Cardz Right" Keyshia does it again. Keyshia sheads the heartbreak for her aching desire that captures her new state-of-mind as well as perfectly telling the story of my life at the moment. Whitney is coming back, but she will have to wait until 2009 for it to be HER year; this year belongs to Keyshia Cole with her million dollar voice and 3 number one's; Jennifer Hudson who ruled this summer with a soul classic "Spotlight", and LaBelle who after 36 1/2 years are finally back to finally be fully appreciated. Musically it is a Hip-Hop world (the Rock world is discintegrating) that finally respects women and appreciates not only its own hip-hop and funk but soul, quiet storm, jazz, r&b, and Gospel. It is because samples and woman who have brought the heat, demand respect, and are finally getting the boys to not only listen, but take them seriously (oh, girl have a lot more desposible income now).

I don't know why I haven't written about this sooner. The "officially" leaked track "Like I Never Left" has Whitney telling us that she wants her loved like she never left. But we all know she is actually talking to her audience. You know I will take her anyway I can get her, and it doesn't matter that it is not as good as her masterpiece "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)". It is a rock press (read: white rock men) don't really understand, really like, or really appreciate these records until years later if at all. How can they be so cold and heartless? It is like Porky Chedwick said "if you don't like this record you got a hole in your soul". They can't identify with a black woman singing about men: good men, bad men, cheating men. They don't like sweeting; they don't like backing vocals; they don't care about the emotional quality of the record or the impressive quality of the singer's voice and phrasing. They just want a man singing, guitars, and songs written by the band (no collaborations or covers).

These new records are part of a continum. How can these "soul fans" not see this. If you only listen to old things and re-discover lost classics from the golden era (1959-1981) then you never really grow. New singers update the music to speak to the new generation using the new language and sounds. Otherwise it becomes a dead genre: nostalgic and out of touch, but when old soul records are played with new ones they sit better than one might think, and it makes the old ones relevant and then new ones can be seen as an extention of the old. If you don't have new musical heroes then there is no one for the future to rediscover.

Let's appreciate the new record what ever it is.

This is just awful. There is nothing we can do when our heroes fall. We are helpless. Another one of our mentors, our storytellers, our parents has died. Our lives still have meaning because of all the lessons we learned from them because of their exquisite gift. They made us want to learn these lessons. One of the true geniuses has died today. I am talking about the death of Levi Stubbs. The shock leaves me numb. But it is when it sinks in that he will never be able to create anything new, and that it is up to us to keep the story and legacy of our heroes alive, since, some of them are no longer here to do it for themselves.

Levi Stubbs Former Lead Vocalist of the Four Tops Dead at 70

Levi Stubbs the most profound lead vocalist in American history died this morning at his Detroit home sources have confirmed. Stubbs who suffered a series of strokes and other illnesses had been sick for a number of years prior to today's news. It was most visible during the televised "50 year anniversary Celebration of the Four Tops" broadcast a few years ago.

Tragedy struck the group when Laurence Payton died in 1997, Obie Benson died in 2005, and now Levi Stubbs October 17, 2008 at the age of 70.

Funeral arrangements will be provided at a later date.

That golden voiced Keyshia Cole had her birthday today, and it was announced recently that her third album A Different Me will drop on December 16, 2008. I am so tired of musicians taking two or more years to complete an album. If an album takes more than two years one's audience is lost, the world has changed, and one has to reinvent oneself according to new rules laid down by kids. Rather than one being the one to create the change. This can only occur when one is more immediate with album releases. You know, the funny thing is when an artist takes all that time to create a "masterpiece" or their perfect statement it is oft-times not as good as one would hope. The first single from this album is "Playa Cardz Right" which features Tupac Shakur. Her vocals are terrific, but soul singers need to STOP creating "duets" with rappers (dead rappers included at least Tupac is only at the beginning, so you can skip over him and just start the record where it becomes important about 1:30 into the song when Keyshia starts). But no matter what it is, it is nice to have a new record by Keyshia. It is so beneath them; these collaborations don't really work that well plus they feel forced, jarring, and formulaic. Often, there is no vocal chemistry. Occationally they are so good like Keyshia & Trina or Janet & Busta. Cole says this album isn't all heartache. This album is also about having fun. It will be nice to have a few songs that aren't about pain, but Keyshia is the BEST singer to come along since Mary J.; she's even better than Alicia (and Alicia is the real deal). She might even be better than Mary because she never had to make hip-hop soul records to be accepted by the men. Keyshia makes straight-up SOUL records; the records she wants to make, and the audience comes to her because of her genius. She tells our stories. We hear our life, loves, and pain beautifully reflected back to us from Keyshia's mirror.

Home Sweet Home, I <3 you!

Last night was awesome. It was my first NYC solo deejaying gig. It was also the first time I was paid to spin. I kept the crowd shakin' it until 3 am, and after that it became an intimate V.I.P. dance party for the few remaining. But I didn't drop the beat or the story I was telling. People at the end heard records that were just as good as the ones that started it all.

I would say that this list is totally geared towards their 12-22 year old demographic, and it perpetuates the whole myth that women are not as tough or talented or as well respected or as popular as the men. After all there was only one woman on the panel, and she was pro-Lupe. I know this is shocking right? Well, my caveat is some of these dudes are so last year. What has 50, Andre, or T.I. done this year? And personally I could never rationalize list space for Lil' Wayne while Jay-Z would make the list for last year's "Ingnorant Sh*t", Kanye "plunderer of black music" West, and Snoop Dogg for "Sensual Seduction" (white hot for using Lil' Kim and Robyn on the two official remixes).

Bo Diddley, Just 79 years young!

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) ‹ Bo Diddley, a founding father of rock 'n' roll whose distinctive "shave and a haircut, two bits" rhythm and innovative guitar effects inspired legions of other musicians, died Monday after months
of ill health. He was 79.

Diddley died of heart failure at his home in Archer, Fla., spokeswoman Susan
Clary said. He had suffered a heart attack in August, three months after
suffering a stroke while touring in Iowa. Doctors said the stroke affected
his ability to speak, and he had returned to Florida to continue rehabilitation.

The legendary singer and performer, known for his homemade square guitar, dark glasses and black hat, was an inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, had a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame, and received a lifetime achievement award in 1999 at the Grammy Awards. In recent years he also played for the elder President Bush and President Clinton.

Diddley appreciated the honors he received, "but it didn't put no figures in my checkbook."

"If you ain't got no money, ain't nobody calls you honey," he quipped.

The name Bo Diddley came from other youngsters when he was growing up in Chicago, he said in a 1999 interview.

"I don't know where the kids got it, but the kids in grammar school gave me that name," he said, adding that he liked it so it became his stage name. Other times, he gave somewhat differing stories on where he got the name.
Some experts believe a possible source for the name is a one-string instrument used in traditional blues music called a diddley bow.

His first single, "Bo Diddley," introduced record buyers in 1955 to his signature rhythm: bomp ba-bomp bomp, bomp bomp, often summarized as "shave and a haircut, two bits." The B side, "I'm a Man," with its slightly humorous take on macho pride, also became a rock standard.

The company that issued his early songs was Chess-Checkers records, the storied Chicago-based labels that also recorded Chuck Berry and other stars.

Howard Kramer, assistant curator of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, said in 2006 that Diddley's Chess recordings "stand among the
best singular recordings of the 20th century."

Diddley's other major songs included, "Say Man," "You Can't Judge a Book by Its Cover," "Shave and a Haircut," "Uncle John," "Who Do You Love?" and "The Mule."

Diddley's influence was felt on both sides of the Atlantic. Buddy Holly borrowed the bomp ba-bomp bomp, bomp bomp rhythm for his song "Not Fade Away."

The Rolling Stones' bluesy remake of that Holly song gave them their first chart single in the United States, in 1964. The following year, another British band, the Yardbirds, had a Top 20 hit in the U.S. with their version of "I'm a Man."

Diddley was also one of the pioneers of the electric guitar, adding reverb and tremelo effects. He even rigged some of his guitars himself.

"He treats it like it was a drum, very rhythmic," E. Michael Harrington, professor of music theory and composition at Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., said in 2006.

Many other artists, including the Who, Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Costello copied aspects of Diddley's style.

Growing up, Diddley said he had no musical idols, and he wasn't entirely pleased that others drew on his innovations.

"I don't like to copy anybody. Everybody tries to do what I do, update it," he said. "I don't have any idols I copied after."

"They copied everything I did, upgraded it, messed it up. It seems to me that nobody can come up with their own thing, they have to put a little bit of Bo Diddley there," he said.

Despite his success, Diddley claimed he only received a small portion of the money he made during his career. Partly as a result, he continued to tour and record music until his stroke. Between tours, he made his home near
Gainesville in north Florida.

"Seventy ain't nothing but a damn number," he told The Associated Press in 1999. "I'm writing and creating new stuff and putting together new different things. Trying to stay out there and roll with the punches. I ain't quit
yet."

Diddley, like other artists of his generations, was paid a flat fee for his recordings and said he received no royalty payments on record sales. He also said he was never paid for many of his performances.

"I am owed. I've never got paid," he said. "A dude with a pencil is worse than a cat with a machine gun."

In the early 1950s, Diddley said, disc jockeys called his type of music, "Jungle Music." It was Cleveland disc jockey Alan Freed who is credited with inventing the term "rock 'n' roll."

Diddley said Freed was talking about him, when he introduced him, saying, "Here is a man with an original sound, who is going to rock and roll you right out of your seat."

Diddley won attention from a new generation in 1989 when he took part in the "Bo Knows" ad campaign for Nike, built around football and baseball star Bo Jackson. Commenting on Jackson's guitar skills, Diddley turned to the camera and said, "He don't know Diddley."

"I never could figure out what it had to do with shoes, but it worked," Diddley said. "I got into a lot of new front rooms on the tube."

Born as Ellas Bates on Dec. 30, 1928, in McComb, Miss., Diddley was later adopted by his mother's cousin and took on the name Ellis McDaniel, which his wife always called him.

When he was 5, his family moved to Chicago, where he learned the violin at the Ebenezer Baptist Church. He learned guitar at 10 and entertained passers-by on street corners.

By his early teens, Diddley was playing Chicago's Maxwell Street.

"I came out of school and made something out of myself. I am known all over the globe, all over the world. There are guys who have done a lot of things that don't have the same impact that I had," he said.

"Pro Nails" is a terrific song, and I love these raunchy ladies (the daughters of Millie Jackson, Laura Lee, and Betty Davis). But come-on Trina still is da baddest bitch. Do you think next year it will be Robyn, Santogold, Amanda Blank, Trina, M.I.A., Keyshia Cole, Yo Majesty, Kid Sister, Lil' Kim, Lil' Mama, V.I.P., Spank Rock, Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Jill Scott, Angie Stone, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Leela James, Alice Russell, Amerie, Vivian Green, Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators, Amy Winehouse, Ryan Shaw, Naomi Shelton (nee Davis) and Her Gospel Queens ruling the world. Gosh, I hope so. Queen Bee and her girls.

Why is it still men dominating the music biz. The women are so much better. They say so much more with so much more meaning. They need to finally get their props. The women are doing so many more interesting things that the fellows. Finally, at least 1/2 to 3/4 of all records on the Billboard charts are black records or imitation R&B or hip-hop. That is good news because black artists don't have to cater to whitey. Now if these kids would only start knowing their soul music history (this includes race records, the blues, jazz, "the Gospel Highway", "the chitlin' circuit", deep crate, norther soul, motown, soul cities, lost labels, and sampled soul). We can hope for revived careers of all our favorites returning from the shadows. Since the field is wide open and the desperation and aching need of real soul in the lives of everybody (some just don't know it or believe they don't like it), many of these women can fine the respect they have long deserved: quite a few from Motown have found acceptance in Europe especially Chris Clark and Brenda Holloway; while, here in the USA second-tier artists (often out of lack of chart success or support from their labels) like Irma Thomas, Sharon Jones, and Bettye LaVette have found great success and validation, Marva Whitney in Japan, and Spanky Wilson in the UK. Some have continued to work like Etta James, Mavis Staples, and Denise Lasalle. Yet, others have influence on another generation by crafting the best records young folks such as Betty Wright has done with Joss Stone. Plus, we can look forward to the re-formation LaBelle album. Miss Patti said on Tavis Smiley that Lenny Kravitz was able to get Nona, Sarah, and Patti to record together.

Gosh, 30 years. I remember crusing to LaBelle. They were the soundtrack to my high school. I couldn't have made it through high school without my crushes some were life long like Betty Davis, Millie Jackson, Laura Lee, LaBelle, Genya Ravan, and Roberta Flack, but others like Linda Ronstadt, E.L.O., Sparks, T.Rex, The Soul Children, and Linda Jones. I know I listen to the ladies. There is something about the quality of the female voice that I love (especially the black woman's voice). What can I say? I am a "ladiest" like Maria Bamford even a "womanist" like Alice Walker says (because the word feminist had no connection to the woman of color's liberation movement); what ever the term I play women to men on my show 3-to-1. Even my fans and steady listeners know it. I love the men, too; I have my favorites: Johnny Bristol, David Ruffin, Levi Stubbs, Ivy Jo Hunter, The Dells, and William Bell, but the ladies do it for me. I identify with the lyrics they sing. After-all Sister Ree is the voice in my head. When ladies sing about "bitches" they are on an even field. When men do it is hurtful, degrading, and misogynistic. Sarah says, "That is actually good that you play the ladies almost exclusively because most people play mostly men. It is not intentional. It just works out that way." If I can give a forum for all those great women then I am pleased to do so. I just think about how when I was a kid I wish I would have heard more Kim Weston, Freda Payne, Lorraine Ellison, Laura Lee, Betty Davis, The Voices of East Harlem, The New Supremes, and The Soul Children on-the-air if I even heard them at all on the radio.

Bobby Parker hospitalized

Blues singer and guitarist Bobby Parker, famous for his hit records "Watch Your Step" [V-Tone, 1961] and "Blues Get Off My Shoulder" [VJ, 1958] as well as his two contemporary blues CDs on the Black Top label, has been hospitalized for the past three and a half weeks. Presently, he is at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. where he has undergone surgery for a mass in his stomach. Georgetown has a reputation as one of the best facilities for internal medicine on the East Coast that's the good news. The bad news is that Bobby has had to cancel all his immediate local engagements as well as an appearance at New Orleans Ponderosa Stomp. His bills are mounting.

For those in the Washington, D.C. area, there will be a benefit concert at the Surf Club, 4711 Kenilworth Ave., Riverdale, Md. on Sunday, May 11th featuring The Nighthawks, Memphis Gold, and Terence McArdle & Jumpin' Tonight with some special guests. We plan to set up a custodial account for Bobby's bills probably through the auspices of the Washington Area Music Association (WAMA-DC).

The Great Debaters
The Great Debaters opened Christmas Day. While Sharon Jones has a cameo appearance in this Denzel Washington and Forest Whitaker star vehicle. The film, based on a true story, is centered around the debate coach Melvin B. Tolson (Denzel Washington) at the historically black Wiley College, and his successful efforts to place his team on equal footing with whites while locked in the Jim Crow south in the 1930s. She dominates the soundtrack chock full of remakes of traditional blues and gospel songs from the '20s and '30s with help from Alvin Youngblood Hart, David Berger, and the Carolina Chocolate Drops.

Ike Turner Remembered At Raucous Funeral

GARDENA, Calif. (AP) ― Ike Turner's funeral was part memorial service, part rock concert.

The nearly three-hour remembrance Friday at Greater Bethany Community Church City of Refuge in Gardena featured Turner's eight-piece band, the Kings of Rhythm, which performed rollicking renditions of some of the musician's greatest hits, including "Nutbush City Limits" and "Proud Mary." The songs brought the crowd of hundreds to its feet.

"Daddy wouldn't want any of us crying," said Turner's daughter, Mia Turner. "He would want us to throw a party."

Among those eulogizing Turner, who died Dec. 13 at age 76, were music producer Phil Spector and rock 'n' roll pioneer Little Richard, who described his friend as "one of the greatest musicians I have ever met in my life."

Richard said that Turner's breakthrough rock 'n' roll hit, "Rocket 88," "shook my soul."

"I took that same introduction and made `Good Golly, Miss Molly,"' he said. "I took that same thing and made a huge hit."

Turner was responsible for a string of hits throughout his career, including 1959's "A Fool in Love" and 1970's "Take You Higher," but his musical legacy was forever tarnished by his image as the drug-addicted, brutally abusive former husband of Tina Turner, who did not attend Friday's funeral. When Ike Turner died, a spokeswoman for Tina said she hadn't had contact with him in 35 years and would not comment.

Ike Turner knew that his personal problems threatened to overshadow his musical accomplishments, said Rob Johnson, producer of Turner's Grammy-winning 2001 album "Here and Now."

"He understood, as a very sensitive artist, the challenge that would be involved in stepping up and moving forward and reinitiating the contribution of his genius, of his music, and giving that gift that God gave him back to society," he said. "How much courage that took for him. It could have been real simple to sit under a rock and let life go by, but he didn't accept that."

Many speakers alluded to Turner's personal woes, though none directly addressed his history of drug and domestic abuse.

"Stop holding this mess - whatever it is - against this man. Even Jesus forgives," said Richard, 75, who left the service early, aided by a walker and several assistants.

Spector, who produced Turner's song "River Deep, Mountain High," said, "There was only one Ike, and I learned more from Ike than any professors I know."

He went on to say that Turner was "demonized and vilified" by his ex-wife, Tina Turner. He called the 1993 film "What's Love Got To Do With It," based on her autobiography, a "piece of trash movie," inspiring applause from some mourners.

"Ike made Tina the jewel she was," said Spector, who stood trial for murder earlier this year for the shooting death of actress Lana Clarkson. A judge declared a mistrial in September after jurors failed to reach a verdict.

Spector also accused Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg of "demonizing" Turner on their talk shows.

Of Turner's 17 months in jail for a drug conviction in 1989, Spector said, "He was sent to prison for no other reason than he was a black man in America."

Each speech was punctuated with performances by Turner's band, the crowd rising to its feet again and again to sing and dance along.

Concert promoter Charlie Dutton, Turner's friend and colleague for 40 years, called him "the most talented musical person to ever live on earth."

"He doesn't get his just dues for what he really did," Dutton said.

Other speakers included Ike Turner Jr., who brought his father's two Grammy Awards on stage.

"He made billions and billions and billions of people happy," he said. "He had the best life."

The service began with a photo montage from throughout Turner's life set to his song "Jesus Loves Me," which features the refrain "I'm a bad boy, but Jesus loves me anyway."

The service concluded with scores of mourners gathering near Turner's casket, which sat beneath a guitar-shaped wreath made of white flowers.

A 10-piece horn-and-drum ensemble played as mourners left the church.

Spector Rips Tina at Ike Turner's Funeral

Music legend and murder suspect, Phil Spector, isn't trying to make friends or curry favor with old pals while he waits for a second trial. He turned up at reviled R&B legend Ike Turner's Los Angeles funeral on Friday and gave an impromptu speech that laid into both Tina Turner and Oprah Winfrey.

Spector, according to our spy in the Greater Bethany Community Church in Gardena, Calif., was among several celebrity mourners including Bonnie Raitt and Little Richard who gathered to say good-bye to the Grammy-winning musician.

"I'm so sorry, I wasn't prepared to say anything," said the thin and frail-looking music producer. "Nobody had told me that I was going to speak. This is a very sad occasion for me."

Spector rambled, but he had points to make. Here they are, for better or worse:

"First of all, the things that were said about Ike, that were in that piece-of-trash movie they made about him were ... (applause), it was a piece-of-trash movie. I haven't seen the movie but it was told to me, and [Barney] Kessel was the world's greatest guitar player in the world and the only reason that Ike didn't play on 'River Deep, Mountain High' was because Ike was the second greatest guitar player in the world. I treasured him and everybody knew it except Ike. That's how good he was

"B.B. King told me at a party with Doc Pomus and Joe Turner and Ray Charles sitting there that Ike Turner was the only guitar player he wouldn't play behind. That's how good he was. But Ike never boasted. He came to parties with me and I'd say, 'play, play' and Ike would never play.

"Ike could play circles around Eric Clapton and Eric knew it. I had someone once ask me what's the difference between Ike Turner and Eric Clapton. I said, 'you don't know the difference between Eric Clapton and Ike Turner? That's funny, why don't you ask Eric, Eric knows.'"

"Ike made Tina the jewel she was. When I went to see Ike play at the Cinegrill in the '90s after his absurd reason for being sent to prison for no reason other than being a black man in America, there were at least, and I counted them, five Tina Turners on the stage performing that night, any one of them could have been Tina Turner."

"And sell-out, whom you really love and respect but I have an ambivalence towards Oprah Winfrey. She made Tina Turner's book into a bestseller, which demonized and vilified Ike. The book wouldn't have sold 10 books. It was badly written. It was a piece of trash and because Oprah idolized Tina, she didn't feel it wrong to vilify a 'brother.'"

"Other black sisters did the same thing to Ike and there was a very famous story about Whoopi Goldberg, who had a television show for about five minutes, interviewed Ike. Ike had called me and said, 'Shall I do the show?'

"I said, 'You can't get hurt.' And he said, 'OK, I'm going to do it.'

"And we figured it would be good because it's Whoopi and Whoopi asked him, 'I understand before you were married when you were living together, you beat the hell out of her and she tried to commit suicide because she was so terrified of you and she tried to jump out of a window,' and Ike said, 'Yeah, but it's hard to jump out of a window from a basement floor.'"

"It was only one Ike. I learned more from Ike than any professors I've been around. He never, ever bothered me. He never interfered with me. He never got in my way."

Motown Legend's Success Was Overshadowed By Abusive Relationship With Ex-Wife Tina Turner

SAN DIEGO (CBS News) ― Ike Turner, whose role as one of popular music's critical architects was overshadowed by his ogre-like image as the man who brutally abused former wife and rock icon Tina Turner, died Wednesday at his home in suburban San Diego. He was 76.

"He did pass away this morning" at his home in San Marcos, in northern San Diego County, said Scott M. Hanover of Thrill Entertainment Group, which managed Turner's musical career.

There was no immediate word on the cause of death, which was first reported by celebrity Web site TMZ.com.

Turner managed to rehabilitate his image somewhat in his later years, touring around the globe with his band the Kings of Rhythm and drawing critical acclaim for his work. He won a Grammy in 2007 in the traditional blues album category for "Risin' With the Blues."

But his image is forever identified as the drug-addicted, wife-abusing husband of Tina Turner. He was hauntingly portrayed by Laurence Fishburne in the movie "What's Love Got To Do With It," based on Tina Turner's autobiography.

In a 2001 interview with The Associated Press, Turner denied his ex-wife's claims of abuse and expressed frustration that he had been demonized in the media, adding that his historic role in rock's beginnings had been ignored.

"You can go ask Snoop Dogg or Eminem, you can ask the Rolling Stones or (Eric) Clapton, or you can ask anybody - anybody, they all know my contribution to music, but it hasn't been in print about what I've done or what I've contributed until now," he said.

Turner, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is credited by many rock historians with making the first rock 'n' roll record, "Rocket 88," in 1951. Produced by the legendary Sam Phillips, it was groundbreaking for its use of distorted electric guitar.

But as would be the case for most of his career, Turner, a prolific session guitarist and piano player, was not the star on the record - it was recorded with Turner's band but credited to singer Jackie Brenston.

And it would be another singer - a young woman named Anna Mae Bullock - who would bring Turner his greatest fame, and infamy.

Turner met the 18-year-old Bullock, whom he would later marry, in 1959 and quickly made the husky-voiced singer the lead singer of his group, refashioning her into the sexy Tina Turner.

Backed by a trio of scantily-clad singers called the Ikettes, Tina Turner's stage persona was highlighted by short skirts and stiletto heels that made her legs her most visible asset. But despite the glamorous image, she still sang with the grit and fervor of a rock singer with a twist of soul.

Tina Turner was also known for her hip-shaking dance moves echoed by the Ikettes who shimmied in sync behind her.

The pair would have two sons. They also produced a string of hits. The first, "A Fool In Love," was a top R&B song in 1959, and others followed, including "I Idolize You" and "It's Gonna Work Out Fine."

Despite the allegations of a troubled marriage behind-the-scenes, Ike and Tina Turner were famous for their smoldering banter on stage during songs like "I've Been Loving You Too Long."

But over the years their genre-defying sound would make them favorites on the rock 'n' roll scene, as they opened for acts like the Rolling Stones.

Their densely layered hit "River Deep, Mountain High" was one of producer Phil Spector's proudest creations. A rousing version of "Proud Mary," a cover of the Creedence Clearwater Revival hit, became their signature song and won them a Grammy for best R&B vocal performance by a group.

Still, their hits were often sporadic, and while their public life depicted a powerful, dynamic duo, Tina Turner would later charge that her husband was an overbearing wife abuser and cocaine addict.

In her 1987 autobiography, "I, Tina," she narrated a harrowing tale of abuse, including suffering a broken nose. She said that cycle ended after a vicious fight between the pair in the back seat of a car in Las Vegas, where they were scheduled to perform.

It was the only time she ever fought back against her husband, Turner said.

After the two broke up, both fell into obscurity and endured money woes for years before Tina Turner made a dramatic comeback in 1982 with the release of the album "Private Dancer," a multiplatinum success with hits such as "Let's Stay Together" and "What's Love Got To Do With It."

The movie based on her life, "What's Love Got To Do With It," was also a hit, earning Angela Bassett an Oscar nomination.

But Fishburne's glowering depiction of Ike Turner also furthered Turner's reputation as a rock villain.

Meanwhile, Turner never again had the success he enjoyed with his former wife.

After years of drug abuse, he was jailed in 1989 and served 17 months.

Turner told the AP he originally began using drugs to stay awake and handle the rigors of nonstop touring during his glory years.

"My experience, man, with drugs - I can't say that I'm proud that I did drugs, but I'm glad I'm still alive to convey how I came through," he said. "I'm a good example that you can go to the bottom. ... I used to pray, 'God, if you let me get three days clean, I will never look back.' But I never did get to three days. You know why? Because I would lie to myself. And then only when I went to jail, man, did I get those three days. And man, I haven't looked back since then."

But while he would readily admit to drug abuse, Turner always denied abusing his ex-wife.

After years out of the spotlight his career finally began to revive in 2001 when he released the album "Here and Now." The recording won rave reviews and a Grammy nomination and finally helped shift some of the public's attention away from his troubled past and onto his musical legacy.

"His last chapter in life shouldn't be drug abuse and the problems he had with Tina," said Rob Johnson, the producer of "Here and Now."

Turner spent his later years making more music and touring, even while he battled emphysema.

Robbie Montgomery - a former Ikette - said Turner's death was "devastating" to her.

"He gave me my start. He gave a million people their start," Montgomery said.

Accolades for Turner's early and later work continued to come in as he grew older, and the once-broke musician managed to garner a comfortable income as his songs were sampled by a variety of rap acts.

In interviews toward the end of his life, Turner would acknowledge having made many mistakes, but maintained he was still able to carry himself with pride.

"I know what I am in my heart. And I know regardless of what I've done, good and bad, it took it all to make me what I am today," he once told the AP.

Bob Relf, one half of Bob And Earl, famous for their hit song Harlem Shuffle, has died at age 70. Here is an obituary written by Jim Dawson.

Bob Relf passed away on Wednesday, November 21st, at the home he shared with his mother in Bakersfield, California. He was aged 70.

Bob had been ill for several years and had received loving care from his mother Idabelle Craft who is 89 years of age. Her remarkable strength comes from her strong faith.

ROBERT NELSON RELF was born in Los Angeles on January 10th, 1937. He is best known for his hits with Earl Nelson as Bob & Earl (most notably "Harlem Shuffle" which was covered by many including The Rolling Stones) but he was also a gifted writer and a staff producer for Randy Wood's Mirwood label, headed by A&R chief Fred Smith. In their attempts to emulate the Motown sound, they unwittingly created their own Mirwood sound which was enhanced by the dramatic arrangements of James Carmichael.

Relf's solo career wasn't very successful but he was highly regarded by soul fans who treasure his recordings - particularly "Blowing My Mind To Pieces" which is one of the most popular 'northern soul' soul hits of all time.

He used the pseudonym 'Bobby Garrett' for two Mirwood singles in 1966. The catchy "I Can't Get Away" became a 'northern soul' favourite in the UK and was used to advertise Kentucky Fried Chicken on national TV. Also popular with 'northern soul' fans is "My Little Girl" which was the flip side of the neglected ballad "Big
Brother".

"Blowing My Mind To Pieces" was recorded in 1968 at Ray Charles' RPM studios in Los Angeles. Relf wrote the song (without credit) which was issued on Trans-American on the flip side of "Girl You're My Kind Of Wonderful". "Blowing My Mind To Pieces" became so popular that it was reissued - and bootlegged - in 1973 to satisfy the huge demand.

A 'new' version of the song was recorded in 1975 by an unknown impostor masquerading as 'Bob Relf'. The man behind the bizarre scam was Simon Soussan, an infamous bootlegger turned producer. The original version is available on dozens of compilations and has been featured on videos, DVDs and TV broadcasts.

In the early '70s Relf worked with Barry White who was then on the verge of major stardom. As youngsters they had sung in groups together and White had played piano on "Harlem Shuffle" back in 1963. Relf wrote and produced for White and for several of his acts including Love Unlimited, Gloria Scott and White Heat. One of Relf's finest songs, the haunting ballad "Bring Back My Yesterday", was recorded by Barry White in 1973 on his ground-breaking album I've Got So Much To Give.

Millbrand acquired publishing and master rights to "Blowing My Mind To Pieces" in 2004 and took actions to recover income from previous unauthorized uses. Just before Relf passed away, Millbrand MD Paul Mooney confirmed that "Blowing My Mind To Pieces" is scheduled for its first legal reissue to tie in with a new movie which features the song.

Before his 'Harlem Shuffle' fame, Bobby Relf was very active in the
1950s Los Angeles R&B Vocal Group (doowop) scene, recording with Jesse
Belvin, Richard Berry and Bobby Day. He was a member of a group called
the Laurels and there are some collectible 45s for 50's group
collectors on Flair, Specialty, Cash, Class & 'X'. He also recorded
with Bobby Day & The Satellites which was a variation of the Hollywood
Flames.

Earl Nelson, also had a 50s vocal group pedigree and recorded with
Bobby Relf with Bobby Day & The Satellites. He was in The Hollywood
Flames and recorded as Earl Nelson & The Pelicans on Class Records.

BTW, 'Harlem Shuffle' was originally a song called 'Slauson Shuffle'
by Round Robin on the Domain label, which was a local dance hit before
Bobby Relf decided to cover it and change the name. (The original
title is from one of L.A.'s major thoroughfares) .

Jerry Light, an original member of the 1960's Motown group The Valadiers, died on 24 July at his St. Augustine home after a long illness. He was 64.

The Valadiers formed in Detroit, MI, in 1959; Stuart Avig (lead), Martin Coleman (lead, bass, baritone), and Art Glasser (second tenor) went to Oak Park High, and Jerry Light (bass, baritone) attended Detroit Mumford. Early influences include Jerry Butler & the Impressions, the Dells, the Flamingoes, and Jackie Wilson. They auditioned at Hitsville USA one day after high school, secured a three-year contract, and became Motown's first white group.

Their initial recording session produced "Nothing Is Going to Change It," and "Somebody Help Me Find My Baby," which Motown shelved. Nothing happened until their next session that produced the self-written "Greetings, This Is Uncle Sam," and "Take a Chance," the B-side. According to Avig, "the sessions took one or two hours for both the vocals and the music." The Valadiers wrote "Greetings," but everyone wanted a piece of the songwriters' credits, the 45 listed only P. Bennent - who nobody knew - as the songwriter. When it appeared on a compilation album, the credits listed Robert Bateman, Brian Holland, and Ronnie Dunbar. B.M.I. lists Bateman, Holland, Dunbar, and the Valadiers as the writers. "Greetings" was popular in the East and the Midwest, but never sold enough copies to classify as a hit.

The Valadiers appeared in Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Flint, Baltimore, Washington, and other cities with the top names in R&B. On a memorable show at the Cleveland Arena with Marv Johnson, the Isley Brothers, and Wilbert Harrison, the blue-eyed soul singers received a louder ovation than the Isleys. They enjoyed playing hometown spots like the 20 Grand Lounge and the Graystone Ballroom. Lead, Stuart Avig, a 5'4" dynamo, had voice that was a cross between Jackie Wilson and Smokey Robinson; his showstopping voice and demeanor wowed audiences.

The Valadiers' next recordings appeared on the Gordy label. "When I'm Away" (released the summer of 1962) and "I Found a Girl" (January 1963) received little promotion and there were no other releases, and they disbanded by 1964. The Monitors redid "Greetings" on Soul Records and out-charted the original. The Isley Brothers also cut a version that remained in Motown's vaults until the mid-'80s. Stuart cut some solo tracks at Golden World Records as Stuart Ames. He tried to bring Marty Coleman along but the owner, Ed Wingate, only wanted Stuart and squashed the record in its promotional stage. He recorded some tracks, uncredited, with the Reflections ("Just Like Romeo and Juliet") on Golden World.

After that experience Stuart sang around town in various clubs solo, or as the Valadiers, when he could assemble a group. Coleman concentrated on songwriting; B.M.I. lists 38 songs by him, but he wrote more. His biggest was "If This Is Love (Than I'd Rather Be Lonely)" by the Precisions on Drew Records. He wrote and arranged for Detroit's Top Dog label, owned by Artie Fields, and remain with the company until it folded after 11 single releases.

One of Marty's Top Dog songs, "Together We Can Make Such Sweet Music," was redone by both the Spinners and the Supremes & the Four Tops on Motown; Joe Towns recorded the original on Top Dog. When Motown absorbed Top Dog, Coleman fell in as a staff writer, placing tunes with the Originals, Gladys Knight & the Pips, and others. Britisher Ian Levine recorded the Valadiers in the late '80s. Stuart Avig was the sole original member, the other spots were filled by stand-ins. The material ran the gamut and included remakes of the Spinners' "Love Don't Love Nobody," the Isley Brothers' "I Guess I'll Always Love You," and the Miracles' "Ooh, Baby, Baby" with Stuart sounding as good as ever.

Light lives in St. Augustine, FL, while Glasser, Avig, and Coleman all reside in the Detroit area. Avig, happily married for 30 years, has two sons and works in the precious metals business. Glasser also works in greater Detroit, but the once talented Coleman is dogged by substance abuse problems. Stuart has fond memories of Motown and calls it "a rewarding experience."

Blues legend Etta James is in a stable condition after suffering
complications during abdominal surgery in Los Angeles, her manager
has confirmed.
The singer, 69, has been in hospital since the operation in mid-
June.

She was due to tour with BB King and Al Green this summer, but will
not be able to make any dates before late August.

"If it had been left solely up to her, she would have checked
herself out of the hospital and started the tour regardless," the
star's manager said.

"However, her doctor advised that were she to do so, it would put
her at very great risk."

Her slot on the tour is being filled by R&B singer Chaka Khan until
further notice.

Drug addiction

Discovered by legendary band leader Johnny Otis, James' career has
spanned five decades.

Throughout the 1950s, she was a mainstay of Otis' R&B revue, and
scored hits with songs like The Wallflower (Dance With Me, Henry)
and Good Rockin' Daddy.

She diversified into mainstream blues during the 1960s, after
signing with Chess Records - and is perhaps best known for her 1961
ballad At Last.

The singer developed a heroin addiction in the 1960s that was to
last for more than a decade, and saw her spend time in psychiatric
hospital.

After kicking her drug habit, she remained a popular concert
performer - although further chart success largely eluded her.

She was inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, and
won the first of three Grammy awards for 1994's Mystery Lady: The
Songs of Billie Holiday.

A year later, she scored a top ten hit in the UK when her version of
I Just Wanna Make Love To You was featured in an advertisement for
Coca-Cola."

SANTA MONICA, Calif. - Songwriter Ron Miller, whose tunes included pop
classics "Touch Me in the Morning" and "For Once in My Life," has died, his
daughter said

Miller died Monday of cardiac arrest at Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center
after a long battle with emphysema and cancer, Lisa Dawn Miller said. He was
74.

Miller got his professional start in the music business in the 1960s, when
Motown founder Berry Gordy saw him perform at a piano bar and invited him to
Detroit as one of the label's first songwriters and record producers.

His songs have been recorded by many leading artists, including Judy
Garland, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and Ray Charles.

"For Once in My Life," written with Orlando Murden, is one of the most
recorded songs in history, with more than 270 versions, according to All
Music Guide. A rendition by Tony Bennett and Wonder won a Grammy award this
year.

In 2005, Charles' and Gladys Knight's version of Miller's "Heaven Help Us
All" picked up the best gospel performance Grammy.

Born in Chicago, Miller was a die-hard Cubs fan, who wrote his first sad
song as a child about his beloved but hapless team, his daughter said.

Before meeting Gordy at the piano bar, Miller made ends meet by selling
washing machines and taking odd jobs. He served in the Marines, as well, and
was stationed all over the world.

Throughout the 1970s, Miller wrote the book and lyrics to many musicals,
including "Daddy Goodness" and "Cheery," based on William Inge's "Bus Stop."
Barbra Streisand recorded "I've Never Been A Woman Before," from the
musical, for her "The Way We Were" album.

"My father will be reborn every time someone sings one of his songs," Lisa
Dawn Miller said. "When they feel joy or sadness or any emotion, that will
be my dad and his words."

Miller is survived by his wife, Aurora Miller, and six children.

A memorial service was scheduled for Aug. 4.

Zola Taylor, 1938-2007
Ms. Zola Taylor, an original member of the classic Platters lineup who scored
international hits with their smooth vocal group harmony sides in the 1950s,
died Monday morning, April 30, 2007, in Los Angeles County, California at age
69. She had been in ill health for some time. Ms. Taylor, whose date of birth
was given as March 17, 1938, had reportedly suffered a stroke several years ago.
An attractive contralto, she recorded and toured internationally with the
Platters from 1954-1964 and was heard on the group's biggest hits including
"Only You", "The Great Pretender", "My Prayer", "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", and
"Twilight Time". Taylor was featured as the lead vocalist on a number of the
Platters' recordings including "Indiff'rent", "He's Mine", "Bark, Battle and
Ball", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "I Don't Know Why", "Maggie Doesn't Work Here
Anymore", and "Mean To Me".
Before being recruited into the the group by manager Buck Ram as a 15-year old
in March of 1954, Ms. Taylor had recorded for RPM Records ("Make Love To Me",
RPM #405) and had worked with Shirley Gunter and the Queens. Taylor and the
Platters appeared in several of the genre's early films, including "Rock Around
The Clock" and "The Girl Can't Help It". At one time, Ms. Taylor was married to
the late singing star Frankie Lymon, and was portrayed by Halle Berry in the
1998 motion picture "Why Do Fools Fall in Love"
During the 1970s, she worked with other former originals Paul Robi and David
Lynch in a touring Platters group and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall
of Fame in 1990.
Ms. Taylor was preceded in death by her former singing partners, Tony Williams
(1928-1992), Paul Robi (1931-1989), and David Lynch (1929-1981). Today, original
founder and bass singer Herbert Reed, is the classic group's sole survivor.

Jean DuShon Attends Funeral for Dakota Staton

Jean DuShon attended the funeral of legendary jazz singer, Dakota Staton
on Monday, April 16, 2007 at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem.

Ms. Staton was one of the last of the great female jazz singers. She
made her mark in 1957 with her debut album, The Late Late Show and was
managed for a spell by John Levy, who also represented Jean DuShon,
Nancy Wilson, Sarah Vaughan, George Shearing, Cannonball Adderley among
many, many others.

Jean felt it necessary that she attend since she had been a long-time
acquaintance and peer of Ms. Staton, who got one of her first breaks in
Detroit at the Flame Show Bar, where Ms. DuShon had early success as
well.

Like Jean, Dakota cited Dinah Washington as an early influence. Dakota
worked steadily throughout the 60s thru the early 90s.

Ertegun Memorial Tonight In NYC

(Reuters) - Some of the biggest names in rock music, including Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton,
Phil Collins and the surviving members of Led Zeppelin, will attend a private memorial in
New York on Tuesday for their late boss, Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun.

Clapton, Collins and Stevie Nicks are among the scheduled performers, an Atlantic
spokeswoman said. The event, organized by Ertegun's widow Mica, will take place at Jazz
at Lincoln Center. Jagger is one of the speakers. Bette Midler will host.

Ertegun died last December aged 83, after suffering a brain injury when he fell backstage
at a Rolling Stones show in October. The Turkish immigrant co-founded Atlantic in 1947,
and brought the blues, jazz and R&B of his adopted country to the masses. The label's
rock roster was equally impressive.

Other scheduled performers will include Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Solomon Burke, Kid
Rock and Sam Moore, Ben E. King, Wynton Marsalis, Manhattan Transfer, and Dr. John
(with Clapton).

What’s Going On? Everything Soul Is New Again

SOUL music has been making quite a comeback of late. Stax Records, once home to the gritty sounds of Otis Redding and Booker T. & the MG’s, was revived last year, with Isaac Hayes, the best-selling artist in the label’s history, again on its roster. Motown, Stax’s slick Northern contemporary, is evoked in the movie “Dreamgirls,” an adaptation of the thinly veiled musical about its most famous female singing group, the Supremes.

The last few years, meanwhile, have seen the re-emergence of a number of singers who first made their mark during soul’s heyday in the 1960s. Solomon Burke, Irma Thomas, Mavis Staples, Candi Staton, Bettye LaVette, Sam Moore and Howard Tate have all released acclaimed albums of new material after laboring more or less in obscurity for decades. This renaissance has yet to translate into big sales or airplay for any of them, but both Mr. Burke and Ms. Thomas are among the nominees at the 49th annual Grammy Awards next Sunday.

Many of the contemporary pop and R&B acts among this year’s Grammy nominees — including John Legend, Gnarls Barkley and Corinne Bailey Rae — are also drinking from the wellspring of classic soul music. Some, like the British revivalists James Hunter and Joss Stone, are updating the styles of their forebears. Others, like Beyoncé and Mary J. Blige, work more in a neo-soul vein, employing studio musicians and samples of older recordings to create a new hybrid.

Of course the myriad tributes to the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, who died on Christmas, have also put soul on the radar. And the performances of recent “American Idol” standouts like Taylor Hicks, Ruben Studdard and Fantasia further illustrate the reach of the music. Swatches of vintage soul have galvanized some of the most indelible hip-hop albums of the last few years, from Ghostface Killah’s “Fishscale” to Kanye West’s “Late Registration.” Even Chan Marshall, the indie-rock favorite who performs under the name Cat Power, went searching for soul in 2006, making a record with members of the Memphis rhythm section that played on Al Green’s signature hits. More than at any time in recent memory soul music’s pressing syncopation and stirring hollers are churning within the popular mainstream.

“It’s coming at us from so many different angles right now,” said Craig Werner, the author of “Higher Ground: Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Curtis Mayfield, and the Rise and Fall of American Soul” (Crown). “It’s coming out of the hip-hop world. It’s coming out of the R&B world. You’re hearing it in pop music too. No matter which vector you’re following, you’re winding up with soul music.”

Doyle Davis, the managing partner of Grimey’s New and Preloved Music, an independent record store in Nashville that stocks a wide selection of soul CDs and LPs, attributes the resurgence to a renewed hunger for authenticity. “People have been fed prefab music for so long that it’s starting to resonate with them that it’s not real,” he said. As D-Funk, Mr. Davis also spins old-school soul and funk records on his long-running show on Vanderbilt University’s FM station, WRVU.

Matt Abels, one of the producers of “What It Is! Funky Soul and Rare Grooves,” a four-CD box released by Rhino Records last year, echoed Mr. Davis’s assessment. “Electronica came along and gave soul to the machines, but now people are coming back and saying they want real soul played by real musicians,” Mr. Abels said. “People want that smoky feel again.”

Terms like “real” and “authentic” are slippery, and studio mavens like Prince Paul and DJ Shadow have been making soulful music for years. Still, Mr. Abels and Mr. Davis are on to something, said Mr. Werner, the chairman of the department of Afro-American studies at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

“People want something that sounds authentic, which I think to them means something that’s not being designed, something that’s not being distanced by advertising images or forced into a mode,” he said. “I hear that from my students all the time. They hate anything that sounds mechanical or processed. They feel like there’s an immediate response to experience in soul music. They hear it and say, ‘Yeah, that’s what’s adding the flavor to the hip-hop cuts.’ ”

The flavor of which Mr. Werner’s students speak enlivens numerous records nominated for Grammy Awards this year. John Legend’s “Save Room” draws on the simmering arrangement of “Stormy,” a 1968 hit for the pop-soul combo the Classics IV. “Crazy,” a crossover smash for the unclassifiable duo Gnarls Barkley, could pass for a D.J.-tweaked outtake from Sly & the Family Stone’s 1973 album, “Fresh.” Ne-Yo’s “So Sick” and Ms. Bailey Rae’s “Put Your Records On” display an affinity with the lyrical balladry that Stevie Wonder perfected on ’70s touchstones like the album “Talking Book.”

Other nominees have gleaned soul flavor from more out-of-the-way places. Christina Aguilera’s “Ain’t No Other Man,” an entry in the best female pop vocal category, samples the Moon People’s “Hippy, Skippy, Moon Strut,” a quaking, horn-driven obscurity from 1969. On “Suga Mama” from the album “B’Day,” Beyoncé, who also stars in “Dreamgirls,” interpolates the gutbucket guitar lines and twitching break beat from Jake Wade’s late-1960s rarity “Searching for Soul.”

A few years ago records like those were the province of collectors, the so-called crate diggers who scoured the bins of thrift shops and used record stores for 45-r.p.m. singles that few outside a hermetic circle of cognoscenti had heard. Now, thanks to digital advances and the Internet, the music is at the fingertips of more than just D.J.’s and producers. Blogs like soul-sides.com post MP3s of rare soul and funk recordings that anyone can download. And for just $2.49 cellphone users can download a ring tone of the hook from Mr. Wade’s long-out-of-print “Searching for Soul” from ubiquity.indieringers.com.

“The Internet has really opened things up,” Mr. Abels said. “I think we’re going to start hearing this music more in movies and on TV. It sets a certain mood.”

An expanding audience for soul concerts, especially among younger rock fans, is contributing to the music’s revival as well. “People love the messiness of live music,” Mr. Werner said. “They love that sense that the players are actually listening to each other and that everything’s not all preplanned.”

For Mr. Davis, “It’s not the same as seeing the latest buzz-band rock band come and perform their album that just got a rave on Pitchfork.”

“You see the indie-rock kids who, if they were at the Sufjan Stevens or Iron & Wine show, would be completely reverent, stroking their beards or whatever, and here they are dancing with giant grins on their faces,” he continued. “I call those epiphanous musical moments. When you go see Bettye LaVette, you have that.”

When Ms. LaVette, now 61, takes the stage, she’s the picture of elegance and athleticism, strutting and shouting for two solid hours in heels and an evening gown. During one electrifying show last year she danced and sang her way through the crowd, parting the sea of onlookers as one enthralled fan knelt before her.

Ms. LaVette hasn’t exactly been out of circulation. Like any number of her contemporaries who first rose to prominence in the ’60s, she has continued to perform for those audiences that will have her, many of them overseas, where enthusiasm for the music has not wavered. Lately, though — and largely on the strength of the reviews of her 2005 album, “I’ve Got My Own Hell to Raise” — she’s been playing to indie-rock and jam-band fans in rock clubs and at festivals like Bonnaroo.

“Most of the people who are coming to see me now had never heard my music, let alone heard of me,” Ms. LaVette said by phone from her home in East Orange, N.J. “But I’ve kept myself healthy, and because this new group is so curious, they keep coming back.”

Still, Ms. LaVette’s records, and those of her rejuvenated peers, are not being played on contemporary hits radio the way they were in the ’60s. Nor are their sales anywhere near the platinum reaches of those generated by albums released by present-day stars like Beyoncé and Mary J. Blige. The fragmentation of pop culture and the premium that radio and video programmers place on younger performers doubtless have something to do with that. Whatever the reasons, classic soul’s lack of airplay is causing some to question whether the music is enjoying as vigorous a renaissance as many people believe.

Isaac Hayes, who is working on a new album for Stax, which the Concord Music Group resurrected in time for its 50th anniversary this year, said soul would have a higher profile were it not for a generational bias in mass media. “Mary J. Blige’s music is based on our music,” he said, “but Mary J. Blige is closer in age to young people than we are. That’s what it is. But I think the gap’s closing. All I can say is just keep your ears open.”

Soul music’s current vogue cannot be chalked up simply to a wave of baby-boomer nostalgia. Many coming to the music for the first time aren’t old enough to remember Mr. Hayes or his peers. For these younger fans, Mr. Werner said, “it’s not a matter of wanting to go back to something” so much as “a case of wanting to establish communication with something that is, if not quite lost, then at least subdued in the culture right now.”

“People are hearing that something in the samples on hip-hop records,” he said. “They’re hearing it in the music in the background of those horrible advertisements that co-opt all of the songs that we love. But even there I think they sense something. They sense an alternative to the commodification — the thingification, as Martin Luther King called it — of our humanity.”

For further evidence of how durable and elastic that message is, there’s the Dirty Dozen Brass Band’s reimagining of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” as a response to what has happened in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Soul music, which dates back to when Ray Charles and Sam Cooke started mashing up gospel and R&B in the ’50s, has never really gone away. “There’s always been this ebb and flow,” said Michael Gray, one of the curators of a current exhibition on Ray Charles at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville. “What’s changed is what’s happening in the culture and the music industry. Platforms are being created to promote these artists.”

Mr. Werner agreed. But he also cited a “deeper response.”

“This isn’t just a revival,” he said. “This is people like Anthony Hamilton, John Legend and Cee-Lo” — of Gnarls Barkley — “who have heard the music and made it their own. That’s what the best music does. It understands that it is part of a tradition but that it’s not recreating the tradition. It’s asking itself, ‘What does this wisdom, what does this humanity, have to tell us about the world we’re in today?’ ”

Motown's first Funk Brother dies at age 79

It was a sad day for Motown fans today as three-time Grammy winner Joe
Hunter of the Funk Brothers was found dead in his Detroit apartment. He was
79.

While the cause of death was unknown at press time, he was diabetic, and his
son said it appeared he was trying to take some medicine when he died.
Hunter, whose jovial personality and snappy dress sense delighted his fans,
had just returned on Sunday from a European tour with fellow Funk Brother
Jack Ashford.

Born in Jackson, Tenn., Hunter moved to Detroit just before his 12th
birthday, although he never lost his Southern accent or charm. He was a raw,
rootsy piano player who started out in the 1950s backing up acts such as
Jackie Wilson and Hank Ballard and the Midnighters, but he could play jazz
or Professor Longhair and Fats Domino-style New Orleans piano as well.

Hunter was Berry Gordy Jr.'s first hire, to back up acts such as Smokey
Robinson and the Miracles on piano in the late '50s, as Gordy mustered a
staff for what would become Motown Records. Hunter also served as Motown's
first bandleader in those very early days.

His soulful, bluesy piano is the first thing you hear on the Marvin Gaye
song "Pride and Joy."

That piano work was an integral part of such songs as Martha and the
Vandellas' "Heat Wave" and "Come and Get These Memories," but after Motown
left Detroit in 1972, like many musicians, Hunter took what gigs he could.

"He was like a father to me and a buddy," said A.J. Sparks, who became
alarmed when he hadn't heard from Hunter since his return from Europe.
Sparks called Hunter's son, Joe Hunter Jr., who went in with Detroit police
and found his father. "Please tell people that we need their prayers,"
Hunter Jr. said.

"He will be welcomed in heaven," said fellow Funk Brother Bob Babbitt.

"I just called his name today," a stunned Martha Reeves said today.

"Joe was one of a kind," said Bert Dearing, owner of Bert's in the
Marketplace and Bert's on Broadway. Hunter not only played his clubs, but
Bert's in the Marketplace was a favorite hangout.

"If I couldn't find any other musicians, he was always willing to come and
do a one-man show. He'd play blues, jazz he worked all my clubs."

Dearing said there will be a gathering of musicians, fans and friends for
Hunter at Bert's in the Marketplace after funeral arrangements are set.

Bruce Resnikoff, president of Universal Music Enterprises, the parent label
of Motown, issued a statement: "Joe Hunter's piano and stellar leadership
helped birth the 'Motown Sound.' You can't miss Joe's piano on those great
early hits. The first of the Funk Brothers, his terrific riffs and
easy-going musicianship will live forever."

The glamour of Motown wore off quickly for Hunter after the '60s. When
Philadelphia musician/historian Allan Slutsky set out to find all the Funk
Brothers in the 1980s, he found Hunter playing for tips at the Troy
Marriott. Hotel guests had no idea who he was.

"Joe was kind of a throwback character, an English country gentleman in an
R&B blues body," said Slutsky, whose book and film "Standing in the Shadows
of Motown" chronicled the Funk Brothers' saga.

"He would come off with that backwoods thing, talking about corn likker and
stuff, but then he would quote Shakespeare," Slutsky added.

After the documentary film "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" was released
in 2002, the Funk Brothers' soundtrack album won two Grammys in 2003. In
2004, Hunter and the Funks were awarded with a Lifetime Achievement Award at
the Grammys, and the group toured for several years.

Hunter's life wasn't all about rhythm and blues and Motown. He was a
longtime supporter of the late Mother Waddles. His son confirmed that up to
the end of his life, Hunter was on-call to go anywhere to play for the
Mother Waddles mission.

While the Funk Brothers had splintered into several different groups in
recent years, Hunter and his colleagues, who played in Motown's Studio A at
2648 W. Grand Blvd. in Detroit, would never again be nameless players, the
musical engine behind all the hits.

"It makes me really happy that I got to see Joe get his place in the sun and
get a little bit of his dream," said Slutsky. "In the beginning of the
movie, he said when the dust settled (from Motown), it was all over for him.
That proved to be wrong. He got his dream in the last part of his life."

In addition to his son, Hunter is survived by a daughter, Michelle, and
three grandchildren.
